SHIFT Idol of the month

Dr. Jordan Sokoloski, HBSc. ND Naturopathic Doctor

Jordan SokoloskiWhat is your story?

I am from Thunder Bay. I went to university at McMaster in Hamilton, Ontario. I then completed a graduate degree in naturopathic medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. I knew I wanted to come back to Thunder Bay after graduating and so I moved back home in 2013 and haven’t looked back since! I am now married with two young boys, so life is busy but I am humbled by the things I have been fortunate enough to achieve.

Why do you choose to stay in Thunder Bay?

I’ve always loved this community and it didn’t take me long to know that I wanted to set up here permanently. Being away from Thunder Bay for the university was a great experience and I made many friends (and met my wife) while living away. But being away really put all of the great things about Thunder Bay in perspective. For nature enthusiasts, Northern Ontario is great year-round. Culturally, the city is diverse and there are great events and landmarks that really showcase that diversity. It is also great to be able to live and work in the same area. There were lots of opportunities to grow professionally here as naturopathic medicine is still relatively small and little known profession in the North. It has been so rewarding and humbling over the past 8 years to see how our work has impacted so many and how awareness of naturopathic medicine has grown.

Tell us about your professional life, workplace, education, training background. How does your organization benefit Thunder Bay ? How do your work and the work of your organization bring Thunder Bay forward?

I work as a naturopathic doctor at Thunder Bay Naturopathic Clinic in the thriving Bay and Algoma neighborhood. Naturopathic doctors complete a rigorous 4-year post-graduate program that prepares them to work as primary care health professionals. This means we are trained to thoroughly assess our patients’ concerns and safely manage their conditions when we meet them for the first time while working within the scope of practice for naturopathic doctors in Ontario. The practice of naturopathic medicine is regulated in Ontario, meaning that there is an oversight body in place to ensure that the public receives care from only highly trained and competent professionals.

I love my job and what I do as a naturopathic doctor — every day, I go to work at my clinic, a small local business run by myself and two other naturopathic doctors, and help my patients achieve their health goals. There are many, many amazing health care professionals in Thunder Bay who do great work with their clients and patients every single day. It is a privilege to work in solidarity with these other professionals in our community as increasingly they understand that naturopathic doctors have a unique role to play as part of an individual’s health care team. A patient comes to see a naturopath to learn which vitamins and supplements would be most effective and safe for addressing their health concerns. We focus on preventative medicine and treating the root cause of concern — but manage symptoms as well using an evidence-informed treatment approach. We treat disease using several therapies including clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, acupuncture, or IV therapy, but also ensure that the foundations of good health are strong — using food as medicine, managing stress, encouraging physical and mental exercise when possible, and establishing restful sleep. As with any health model, our patients are at the center of care. It is our role to provide the information, resources and support they need to make informed choices about their care.

Healthier individuals mean a healthier community.  We work on multiple levels to positively impact our community. We are a business that promotes social equality and we often advocate for our patients in this regard.  We offer affordable and accessible acupuncture in town during Community Acupuncture shifts, and we also provide a sliding scale to ensure that anyone who wants to access naturopathic medicine is able to do so.  All three naturopathic doctors at our clinic regularly speak at events around the city promoting mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing.  We are involved in our children’s daycares and schools, giving free nutrition talks to kids, participating in breakfast clubs, parent councils and generally contributing to the greater good in Thunder Bay.  We participate in forward-thinking business and cultural organizations including SHIFT, Thunder Pride, Wake The Giant, and the Thunder Bay and Area Food strategy.  We prioritize low impact and environmentally sustainable options and we are active participants in the movement of our city towards a healthier, more progressive and environmentally-sustainable future.

Why are you a part of SHIFT?

I believe it is important for young professionals to connect and engage with each other. It increases awareness about the other amazing and inspiring things that others are doing in our community and it provides a forum for sharing ideas and learning about the successes and challenges of others. It’s also a great excuse to get out and socialize!

What is your message?

I think getting the message out about what we do at our clinic is most important. There is a lack of awareness around what naturopathic doctors do and creating awareness — and letting people know that we can help with their health concerns in collaboration with their other care providers —  is important to us.
